Frequently asked questions

Help with installation, addons, playback and sync.

What Lumen is

Getting started with Lumen.

Is Lumen free?

Yes. Playback, your library, history, downloads and backups are free on every device. Hosted sync costs €19 once per household after a 14-day trial. You can also host your own sync server for free.

Does it come with movies or shows?

No. Lumen ships no content sources. It bundles two keyless addons for metadata and subtitles, Cinemeta and OpenSubtitles; everything else comes from the addons you install.

Installing it

Installation help for Windows, Android and Android TV, macOS and iOS.

Why does Windows warn me?

The installer is not code-signed yet, so the first run shows “Windows protected your PC”. Click More info, then Run anyway.

To be sure the file is ours, compare its SHA-256 with the one beside the download before you run it.

How do I install on Android TV?

Sideload the arm64-v8a APK: open it with a file manager on the TV, from a USB stick or a network share, and allow installs from that app. Or install it from a computer with adb install. Both routes are written out on the download page.

Does it run on Mac, Linux or iOS?

Mac and iPhone yes, Linux not yet. There is a macOS build for macOS 12 and newer and an iOS and iPadOS build for version 15 and newer, both in preview: neither is code-signed, so macOS asks you to allow the first launch and the iPhone build has to be signed with your own Apple Account before it will install. Linux is possible from the same code but is not built or tested, and there is no tvOS app.

Does it update itself?

Not today. Lumen never contacts this site, so nothing checks for a new version; you download the new build and, on Android, install it over the old one. The release feed exists so an in-app check can be added later.

Your data

Where it lives, what leaves the device, and how to carry it somewhere else.

Where is my data?

On the device, in the app's data folder: your library, watch progress, installed addons, settings and anything you downloaded. If you turn sync on, encrypted copies go through the relay; nothing else leaves.

Do you collect anything?

No. No analytics, no telemetry, no account. The app talks to your addons, to TMDB or Trakt only if you enter your own keys, to the sync relay only if you turn sync on, and to the video platform when you press Trailer.

How do I back up my library?

Settings, Storage. Back up data writes one file with your whole library, progress, addons and settings. Restore from backup swaps a backup back in on the next start and keeps your current data alongside as a pre-restore copy.

Playing things

What the engine decodes, and what language the app speaks.

Does it play TrueHD, Atmos and DTS?

Yes, on Windows and Android with the shipped engine. Lumen's own build of mpv and FFmpeg carries every LGPL decoder, so an Atmos remux plays its lossless track instead of falling back to the companion.

Running it your way

Hosting the parts you would rather host yourself.

Can I run my own relay?

Yes. The relay executable is installed beside the app; put it behind a reverse proxy with TLS and enter its address under Settings, Sync across devices, Advanced on every device. A self-hosted relay never needs a Lumen Pass.

Lumen Pass

What the Pass covers, what it does not, and what happens if you never buy one.

Is Lumen still free?

Yes. Playback, your library, history, downloads, backups and every device stay free. The Pass covers syncing through our hosted relay after the 14-day trial, and nothing else.

What does a Pass cost?

€19, once, tax included. One Pass covers your household: every device paired to the same sync space.

Do I need a Pass for the TV?

No. The Android TV app plays without one. It only needs a Pass to keep syncing through our relay, exactly like every other device.

I lost my key.

Recover your Pass with the email you used at checkout. Your key is sent to that address. It is also in your receipt email.

I lost my pairing code.

That is a different thing, and it matters. The pairing code is the encryption secret your devices share. We never have it and we cannot recover it — keep it, or keep one paired device. Recovering a Pass restores your payment, not your encryption keys.

Can I move my Pass to a new household?

Yes, free and as often as you need. Activate it from the new household under Settings, then Sync across devices, and confirm the transfer. The previous household stops syncing through our relay and keeps its local data.

Can I get a refund?

Within 14 days, yes, through the link on your Stripe receipt. No questions asked. A refund ends the Pass.

What happens if I don't buy after the trial?

Syncing through our relay pauses. Nothing else changes on any of your devices.
